By Sarah Speirs, ICAS Executive Director of Member Engagement and Communication

27 October 2022

Main points:

  • In this issue, ICAS President, Indy Singh Hothi CA, explains why mental agility is a CA’s strongest attribute, and we reveal the findings from this year’s ICAS Practice Survey.
  • Team GB’s former psychologist, Dr Kate Goodger, shares wellbeing tips for unlocking barriers to performance, and we hear from co-founder of Rooser, Joel Watt CA, on the companies' aim to eliminate waste from the fishing industry.
  • One Young CA 2020, Amjad Hassan CA, reflects on his standout moments from the One Young World Summit, and ICAS Members Board Wellbeing Lead, Samantha Frost CA, shines a light on financial abuse.
  • CAs discuss the challenges facing the energy sector, and the work-life balance to be found in Zurich, Switzerland.
  • There’s a look at why mental fitness is becoming a measurable metric pivotal for business, and two CAs recount how their own experiences with mental health inspired them to help others.
  • Finally, in our regular Meet the Practice feature we meet founder of GM VAT Solutions, Lynn Gemmell CA.

The case for investing in mental fitness as a business priority has become even more significant, particularly as we navigate through mounting economic challenges.

In this month’s edition of CA magazine, ICAS spotlights the theme of mental fitness as part of our Finance+ insight series. Thought leaders share their perspectives on the topic, with the aim of creating dialogue around personal wellbeing and countering the stigmas surrounding mental health in the workplace and beyond.

The theme for this issue of CA magazine is mental fitness. As ICAS President Indy Singh Hothi CA spells out in his column, mental agility can be viewed as the strongest attribute in any CA’s skillset.

It’s a facility that will be very much in demand as colleagues, relatives and friends try to navigate their way through mounting economic challenges. If greater demands are placed on CAs, it must not be at the expense of their mental health.

ICAS is now well into year two of a three-year mental fitness strategy. One of our key objectives has been to create more dialogue around personal wellbeing for members. No matter where you work, all members have access to the insights, advice and resources through our Finance + Mental Fitness hub, where there are videos and podcasts available to enjoy.

Elsewhere in this issue, two CAs talk about their personal problems with mental fitness while working in finance, and how it led them to start new careers helping other business professionals improve their own wellbeing.

Indeed, we always encourage CAs to share their knowledge. One way to help fellow members is through Career Connections, the ICAS mentoring platform.

Meanwhile, ICAS Members Board Wellbeing Lead, Samantha Frost CA, shines a light on financial coercion and explains how anyone can be the victim of that abuse of power, often without even realising it.

As we know, circumstances can change very suddenly. And so, before signing off, I want to draw attention to the Scottish Chartered Accountants’ Benevolent Association, which supports CAs in need. You can find out more about the important work it does – and, if you wish, donate – at the website.

I hope you enjoy the issue.
