Joint Insolvency Examination Board Training Programme for Insolvency Professionals

The Joint Insolvency Examination Board (JIEB) examinations are a set of professional exams for those who want to become a licensed insolvency practitioner.

Recognised both inside and outside insolvency, JIEB is your opportunity to lay the foundations for a career in one of the UK's most rewarding professions.

ICAS Professional Development provides an excellent study programme in partnership with BPP, to prepare you for the JIEB assessments. Our training programmes are delivered through a blended learning approach using online live interactive lectures with the revision sessions and mock exams taking place face-to-face in Edinburgh. All our sessions are recorded, with opportunities to stream and watch any sessions you may have missed.

The JIEB exams are held once a year, usually in November.  They are comprised of two computer-based papers:

  • Corporate insolvency
  • Personal insolvency

Each paper is 3 hours long with 1/2 hour allowed for reading time.

All candidates are required to apply for examinations as a registered JIE Student through a Recognised Professional Body such as ICAS.

Further information is available on the JIEB website in terms of the process for applying for the JIEB exam.

For full details on the training programme dates, download the timetable below.

Individual sessions may also be bookable - please call 0330 060 3303 or email for a tailored price.

Entry requirements

To sit JIEB exams, you must be authorised by one of the following Recognised Professional Bodies:

  • Insolvency Practitioners Association (IPA)
  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)
  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS)
  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland (ICAI)

Gain your Practitioner Licence

In order to qualify for the coveted Insolvency Practitioner Licence, you must have passed one or both JIEB exams. You can attempt both papers at one sitting, or split the papers over two years. You can also elect to sit one paper only if applying for a partial licence.

How to become an ICAS insolvency practitioner

Insolvency is a highly regulated area of practice and IPs must complete training in many aspects of law and practice.
