How to become an ICAS JIEB student

Find out how to register as an ICAS JIEB student and become an ICAS licensed insolvency practitioner.

What are the Joint Insolvency Examination Board (JIEB) exams?

To become a licensed insolvency practitioner, you must first pass the JIEB exams.

The exams are held once a year, usually in November and comprise two papers:

  • Corporate Insolvency
  • Personal Insolvency

Each paper is 3 hours long with 1/2 an hour allowed for reading time.

Candidates need to pass each paper to be able to receive a full Insolvency licence. However, candidates only need to pass one examination to obtain a partial licence to specialise in either personal or corporate insolvency.

The JIEB exams are a demanding practical test of the knowledge and skills that insolvency practitioners use in their working lives.

Registering for the exams

To take the exams you must first register with one of the recognised professional bodies. When you want to enrol for JIEB training you can become a registered student with ICAS. You don’t have to be a Chartered Accountant Member, or be sponsored by a Member, to be a student.

All JIEB students are welcome to register with ICAS, irrespective of where in the UK you intend to attend courses or to sit the exams. There is no requirement to have an accountancy qualification, but if you do it does not have to be with ICAS.

To register as an ICAS JIEB student please complete the application form and email it to regulatoryauthorisations@icas.com.

Why choose ICAS?

ICAS is the world’s first professional body of accountants receiving its Royal Charter in 1854 and has a world class reputation.

We have years of experience in licensing Insolvency Practitioners, both CA members and non-members alike. As a small professional body, we are close to our students and licensed insolvency practitioners, a relationship that we value.

As an ICAS JIEB student you will have access to insolvency material on our website, free membership to your local insolvency discussion group and access to our technical helpdesk for study related issues.

What does it cost?

Student registration runs for each calendar year and costs £50 annually.

Once you are JIE qualified

Once qualified you may apply to become an ICAS licensed Insolvency Practitioner.

More information

For more information on becoming an ICAS JIEB student please contact Steven Wood at swood@icas.com or 0131 347 0232.

More information on the exams, including the exams application form, is available on the JIEB website.
