ICAEW webinar on 24 July on devolved taxes – Presented by Charlotte Barbour and Frank Haskew

The devolution of tax powers to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland differ – in timing and in nature. They also offer a surprisingly complex set of arrangements. This webinar sets out to provide an overview of the devolved tax powers and pointers to areas where care needs to be taken when advising clients across the UK. This session considers:

  • An overview of the devolved tax powers
    • Fully devolved taxes - exercised over land transactions and landfill.
    • Shared or partially devolved tax - such as CT in NI or Income Tax in Scotland and Wales.
    • Assigned VAT.
  • Operational issues that arise in 2019/20 based on the Scottish experience.
  • Some questions, observations and recommended policy priorities.
  • Horizon scanning ....... new taxes?

Edinburgh Tax Network - 25 July 2019

The Edinburgh Tax Network, in conjunction with Terra Firma Chambers, will present a seminar entitled “Construction Industry VAT – an Update: including Reverse Charge on Construction Services (Goods?)” on Thursday 25 July 2019 at the Mackenzie Building, Old Assembly Close, Edinburgh.

The speaker is Nigel Roberts, ATT, Director of VAT and indirect taxes, Johnston Carmichael.

Nigel heads Johnston Carmichael’s VAT and indirect taxes team. With over 30 years experience, Nigel started his career with HMRC followed by a number of senior roles in “Big 4” advisory firms and a spell as Head of VAT and operational taxes at a global financial services group. This breadth of experience allows him to bring a broad perspective on VAT matters to all his clients.  The points to be covered are:

An overview of the changes and the reason behind their introduction;  Who and what will be caught; VAT accounting and documentation; The commercial impact on the construction supply chain; What needs to be done to prepare ?

The speaker will be Karen Davidson of Brodies LLP. Karen has over twenty years’ experience (in legal practice as well as at a senior level in a Big 4 consulting practice) of advising on the structuring and implementation employee/management equity incentive arrangements as well as advising on the tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions, investments and corporate re-organisations. She is ideally placed to speak on this subject.
