Want to build a rock star team? Focus on these four people
Having the right mix of people is the secret sauce for a high performing firm. Careers expert Jan Bowen-Nielsen talks us through what it really takes to build an all-star team.
Team building is an art in itself, and finding the balance between skills and talent vs personalities and fitting into company culture is no mean feat. And the leader who builds a consistently high performing team is worth their weight in gold. A successful company operates best when its employees are genuinely excited by the thought of delivering out-of-the-park results.
"The right mix of people can bring a variety of skills, and the role of a manager is using that blend of talent to build success," said Jan, founder and director of specialist coaching company Quiver Management.
Jan explains the four most common workplace personalities (using the behavior assessment DISC tool), and their basic workplace characteristics. He said: "people are a mix of all four styles, but usually one or two traits will be prevalent in their everyday behaviour."

1. The Dominant leader
This person finds the bottom line, fast. Jan said: "the dominant personality places emphasis on accomplishing results, the bottom line, and confidence. Their trait behaviours include being direct, results-orientated, firm, strong-willed and forceful.
"They see the big picture, relish challenges, and like to get straight to the point. They can become impatient and demanding when under pressure."
2. The excited Influencer
When you need oodles of enthusiasm and teamwork, even when its 8pm and the end isn't yet in sight. "Influencers place emphasis on persuading others, openness, and relationships," said Jan. "Their trait behaviours include being outgoing, enthusiastic, optimistic, high-spirited and lively.
"They like to collaborate and dislike being ignored. Others may sometimes see them as being impulsive or disorganised."
3. For reliable Steadiness
Because sometimes you need a safe pair of hands. For people who fall into the steadiness category, the greatest emphasis is placed on cooperation, sincerity and dependability. Jan explains: "their normal behavioural traits include being even-tempered, accommodating, patient, humble and tactful." They are supportive of others and don’t like to be rushed, and they fear letting people down. "They sometimes give-in early, or stay quiet, to avoid conflict," Jan explains.
4. The Conscientious colleague
This is the person who places the most emphasis on quality and accuracy, analysis, expertise and competency. "Their normal behaviours include being analytical, reserved, precise, private and systematic," Jan said, "and they enjoy independence and details, but fear being wrong. To others they can come across as critical and traditional."
