New Wellbeing Toolkit for managers in the accountancy profession

The new Wellbeing Toolkit is a comprehensive guide designed to support managers working in the accountancy profession.

The Wellbeing Toolkit for managers in the accountancy profession was produced by ICAS in collaboration with partner bodies as part of Chartered Accountants Worldwide’s Wellbeing Taskforce.

The toolkit will help you navigate the complex landscape of employee wellness. It is a valuable resource that equips you with the insights, strategies and best practices needed to foster a thriving and dynamic team.

Above all, it emphasises the critical need to build resilience and purpose within the workplace, contributing to a more productive, rewarding and compassionate work environment.

One feature of the toolkit is a case study from an ICAS member who works for a global investment business and provides guidance on how to transition back to the workplace after taking time off.

We are sharing the toolkit on2023’s World Mental Health Day, a global celebration which raises awareness and drives positive change for everyone’s mental health.

The importance of fostering employee wellbeing in our industry

Mental health has a profound impact on work performance, relationships and overall quality of life.

Depression and anxiety, prevalent mental health conditions, exert a significant economic toll, amounting to US$ 1 trillion each year on the global economy. The Gallup Global Employee Survey paints a concerning picture, revealing that less than a quarter of the world's employees feel they are thriving at work, underscoring the urgency to address this growing challenge.

An extensive survey by the McKinsey Health Institute across 15 countries and 15,000 employees unearths a stark reality - 59% of the workforce grapples with mental health challenges, highlighting the imperative for employers to intervene and support their teams. This holds true for the chartered accountancy profession, where stress and burnout are prevalent issues, affecting over half of chartered accountants.

Managers within this industry play a pivotal role in shaping a conducive work environment that fosters mental, emotional, and physical health. Recognising the direct link between comprehensive support and heightened engagement and productivity, it becomes both an ethical and strategic responsibility to manage wellbeing effectively.

The Chartered Accountants Worldwide wellbeing taskforce acknowledges this imperative and is proud to introduce the Wellbeing Toolkit for managers in the accountancy profession.

More wellbeing support for ICAS members, firms and students

The ICAS Mental Fitness Pledge – Healthy Minds Start Here – is our long-term commitment to educate, support and lead on mental health. We want to stimulate debate and promote positive wellbeing for the good of the profession.

You can find practical resources, insight, discussion and signposting to more support in the CA Wellbeing area of our website. You can also catch up on wellbeing related content in case you missed it in CA magazine or at our online events.

Our Student Assistance Programme is suite of wellbeing services offering support for all CA students, provided by Health Assured. This is a confidential service designed to help students deal with personal and professional problems that could be affecting their home life, work-life, health and general wellbeing.

The Evolve member wellbeing helpline

Earlier this year we launched our Evolve member wellbeing helpline, a free service for all practice firms which are members of Evolve, and for their employees.

It offers a confidential helpline for both the CAs and non-CAs working in your firm, with access to experienced counsellors and advisers who are there with support 24/7.

As well as the helpline, members can access an online wellbeing portal and app for advice and wellbeing support. You can also connect with an expert counsellor for a block of one-to-one sessions, free of charge.

This suite of wellbeing services is designed to help deal with problems arising from personal or work life that could be affecting your health and general wellbeing. Support is available on a wide range of matters such as mental wellbeing, money management and debt, legal issues and medical information.
