Earth Hour 2022 – a chance to shape our future

By Anne Adrain, Head of Sustainability and Reporting

24 March 2022

Main points

  • Earth Hour 2022 takes place between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Saturday 26 March.
  • The theme for 2022 is ‘Shape our Future’.
  • This theme resonates with the message in ‘the Power of One’ that our individual actions, however small, can make a big difference.

Anne Adrain describes the theme for Earth Hour 2022 and explains how you can get involved.

Earth Hour 2022 is being observed on Saturday 26 March from 8.30pm to 9.30 pm. This global movement is an opportunity to switch off our lights for one hour and reflect on the wonders of our natural world.

The theme for Earth Hour 2022 is ‘Shape our Future’ and reminds us that our individual actions, however small, can make a big difference. When we make changes in our own lives to reduce our carbon footprint, we inspire those around us to do the same.

Reinforcing The Power of One

This year’s theme reinforces the messages in the ICAS business ethics initiative, The Power of One which calls on all CAs to place ethical leadership at the heart of their professional responsibilities, to shape the culture and values of their organisations, to help re-establish ethics at the core of business practices and to rebuild public trust in business.

Those messages can also be applied to sustainability and the role of the accountancy profession in the creation of a more sustainable world. ICAS recently joined the other accounting bodies in the Global Accounting Alliance (GAA) to issue a call to action for the profession to play their part in protecting and restoring the natural environment.

And in October 2021, ICAS joined other global accounting bodies in committing to reach net zero emissions as soon as possible.

Every CA has the power

Every individual CA has the power – The Power of One – to influence those around them. CAs are a force for good in, and can have a strong role in shaping the culture and values of, the organisations for which they work. The cumulative effect of their influence can help reinforce the importance of ethics and sustainability as part of a more responsible and holistic approach to business, to the benefit of all of society.
