Career support

Discover our guidance and resources to help you return from a break, make a change or take the next step.

Your career is a journey made up of multiple stages, with different directions in which to travel and important decisions to be made along the way.

You might have a specific goal in mind or be stuck and wondering what next and how to get to where you ultimately want to be. Rest assured, ICAS is here to help.

Whether you’re considering a change, returning from a break or looking to take the next step, our support, guidance and resources will help keep your career on track.

Help to develop your career or make a change

A focus on career development can come at any stage of your working life, from the years following qualification to much later down the line, and the same can be true for decisions on making a change.

Here we have advice for young CAs looking to plan their first years post-qualification, for those looking to climb the ladder and for anyone considering a change of course.

Browse our resources and you’ll find articles to provide inspiration, to help you plan, take you through the stages of the process and keep you on track when you get there.

Help to return from a career break

People take career breaks for various reasons, some through choice and others forced upon them, including for caring or parenting duties or because of illness of redundancy.

Whether you’ve taken a few months out or have been away for a more extended period, returning to work from a break can seem like a daunting prospect. Even a short time out can leave you lacking confidence, questioning your readiness to return and feeling like the profession has left you behind.

We’re here to help and show that the right mindset and proper preparation can smooth any return to work. We have advice on preparing to go back, information on what employers look and resources to help ensure your accounting proficiencies and technical skills are up to date and that you’re ready to pick up where you left off.

Mentoring

You can benefit from the input of a mentor at any stage of your career, from guiding your first steps, to climbing the ladder, returning from a break or kick-starting a new business venture. By connecting with a mentor you’ll gain from their years of experience, learn from the mistakes they made along the way and so avoid making the same errors as your own career unfolds.

Furthermore, becoming a mentor and helping a less experienced CA to achieve their goals is a great means of developing your management, communication and leadership skills, can widen your network and help you gain fresh perspective and invaluable insight.

We offer a range of options and opportunities, including our new Career Mentoring platform.
