London Climate Action Week 2021: how we all need to take action to tackle climate change

Main points:

  • This week, 26 Jun to 4 July, marks London Climate Action Week 2021.
  • Now in its third year, this year’s event encourages everyone to come together to tackle the urgent issue of climate change.
  • There are four themes for this year’s event and the various sessions will focus on these throughout the week.

This article summarises the key themes of London Climate Action Week 2021.

This week, 26 June to 4 July, marks London Climate Action Week during which a series of events will take place aimed at harnessing the power of London for global climate action. We are all increasingly aware of the need to tackle the issue of climate as a matter of urgency and that we all need to play our part, one of the key themes for this year’s event. At ICAS, we are demonstrating our commitment to tackling climate change through our operations, our advocacy and influencing work and training.

The four themes of the London Climate Action Week 2021 event are:

1. Green, fair and resilient recovery

Global leaders have committed to a fair, equitable and green Covid-19 recovery. This year’s event will take stock of how far we have come on these promises and whether we are in fact on a pathway to a green recovery. There will also be a focus on what needs to happen between now and the UN COP26 climate conference in November 2021 to ensure that world leaders can deliver a resilient, fair and inclusive recovery.

2. Road to COP26

The countdown to the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow this November has begun. The events taking place during London Climate Action Week will explore where we are on the road to COP26 and the expectations for this year’s summit. Importantly, there will be an emphasis on what needs to be done to achieve the transformational change needed to deliver climate security for all.

3. Whole of society climate action

Never has there been a greater need for everyone to come together to tackle the issue of climate change. We all need to play our part across the whole of society and across generations. Hence, the events taking place this year represent all sections of society.

4.  Sustainable, net-zero London

The effect of COVID-19 on London has been devastating and, while the signs of recovery are encouraging, there is still a degree of uncertainty about what the future might hold. Inevitably, though, life and work in London is going to change and it is unlikely that things will return to how they were before the pandemic struck. The events taking place during London Climate Action week will examine how these changes might unfold and how the city can rebuild post-pandemic.
