18 November 2022

17 November marked International Students’ Day. To mark this day, we recognise our fellow CA Students, and are sharing some of the resources that could benefit the CA Students within your Firms.

Resources for Students within your Firm

Career Mentoring Programme

Connecting Students with a senior CA can be a positive step in building confidence and career. A mentoring relationship should be a safe space for talking openly and may be a source of guidance on dealing with professional stress. Having a senior CA as a mentor can provide insight from years of experience.

If you or someone you know is looking for any guidance or support, then consider signing up to our Career Mentoring programme.

Student Assistance Programme

There are many factors that can impact a Students’ mental health. Some of the common issues involve financial worries, legal concerns and family complications, all of which the programme can assist with. The Student Assistance Programme offers emotional support and practical advice on a range of issues.

This is a confidential service designed to help individuals deal with personal and professional problems that could be affecting their home life, work life, health and general wellbeing.

By accessing the Student Assistance Programme CA Students can access the following support and resources:

Helpline service

The helpline service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year by calling 0800 028 3766 and quoting the institution as ‘ICAS’. The call will be handled by an experienced therapist or doctor, who will offer support in a friendly, non-judgemental manner.

The helpline can offer help on a range of non-emergency issues. CA Students will be asked for some initial details as well as questions about what the call relates to before providing access to the right support. The service is confidential and any information provided will not be shared with ICAS or the Firm.

Wellbeing Portal

The Wellbeing Portal is a virtual library of wellbeing information. The articles and self-help guides provide support on a range of health and advisory issues, as well as instant guidance to aid physical and mental health.

SCABA

If a CA Student in your firm is experiencing difficulties, The Scottish Chartered Accountants’ Benevolent Association (SCABA) may be able to support them through tough times.

SCABA is a charity which supports CAs, their dependants and prospective CAs who are in need.

SCABA helps by providing grants, loans and support visits. A certified financial advisor can help get things under control and ease the pressure.

An Outreach Coordinator can provide a listening ear and practical support such as ensuring that the Student is accessing all the benefits and support available.
