How do we create sustainable, scaleable and successful businesses for the future?

During day two, speakers examined the changes we can make today to create sustainable, scaleable and successful businesses. We looked at the challenges and opportunities facing businesses in 2023 and delved deep into all the elements needed for successful businesses of the future: diversity, mental health, nurturing talent, new ways of leadership, governance, reporting and resilience.

The Grow chapter took place on day two of the CA Summit -  5 October from 1-2.30 pm.

Dame Stephanie Shirley, Business Pioneer and Philanthropist

Session time: 1-1.20pm BST

Session description: "I needed to make sure my life was worth saving" - Holocaust survivor, tech entrepreneur and philanthropist Dame Stephanie Shirley on her personal and professional growth story.

Bio: Dame Stephanie (Steve) Shirley CH is an ardent venture philanthropist with an unrelenting energy for creating positive change. She arrived in England as an unaccompanied child refugee at the start of WWII, going on to start a software business ultimately valued at almost $3 billion. Now in her late 80s Dame Stephanie is motivated to share the rewards of her success with a society that had extended such generosity to her as a child, Dame Stephanie decided to give away her wealth.


Helen Brocklebank,  Chief Executive of Walpole,  Executive Member of the European Cultural and Creative Industries Alliance

Session time: 1.20-1.30pm BST

Session description: How can we rebuild the UK’s tourist economy - Walpole CEO Helen Brocklebank reveals what’s needed for the UK luxury tourism sector to thrive again in a post-Brexit and pandemic world.

Bio: Helen Brocklebank is the Chief Executive of Walpole, the industry association for the British Luxury sector. In addition to her role at Walpole, Helen is an Executive Member of ECCIA, the European Cultural and Creative Industries Alliance, working with sister luxury associations across Europe to ensure the legislative and regulatory framework supports and protects the business of luxury.


Michael Stausholm,  Founder, SproutWorld

Session time: 1.45-1.55pm BST

Session description: How to grow a sustainable business - From blockchain tech to young talent, Sprout World founder Michael Stausholm talks planet-friendly innovation.

Bio: Michael Stausholm is the founder of Sprout - the company behind the first pencil in the world that can be planted and grown into herbs, vegetables, trees and flowers.

SproutWorld has sold more than 50 million plantable pencils in more than 80 countries from its head office in Denmark.


Natalie Campbell, Award-Winning Social Entrepreneur and Broadcaster, Co-CEO of Belu Water

Session time: 1.55-2.10pm BST

Session description: Panel: Leadership in 2022 and beyond - Leadership has changed. Panellists Indy Sing Hothi CA, Buki Ishola, Natalie Campbell and Alison Cornwell CA discuss the new ways of leading in a modern era.

Bio: Natalie Campbell is an award-winning social entrepreneur and broadcaster. She is Co-CEO of Belu Water, a drinks business that puts people and the environment first. She is also strategic advisor to Stonehage Fleming and Percent and holds a number of public appointments and non-executive positions related to leadership and inclusive economic growth.


Buki Ishola CA, Leadership  and Career Strategy Coach

Session time: 1.55-2.10pm BST

Session description: Panel: Leadership in 2022 and beyond - Leadership has changed. Panellists Indy Sing Hothi CA, Buki Ishola, Natalie Campbell and Alison Cornwell CA discuss the new ways of leading in a modern era.

Bio: Buki is a Leadership & Career Strategy Coach with a dual focus on coaching African diaspora senior professionals to advance in their careers and leaders to create inclusive cultures.

Buki works with African diaspora senior professionals in Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East to navigate work and personal challenges in the way of thriving and advancing in their careers. She runs workshops for Senior leaders in organisations to share insights and guidance on improving the career outcomes of Black and Ethnic minority talent.


Alison Cornwell CA, Group CFO at Vue  International

Session time: 1.55-2.10pm BST

Session description: Panel: Leadership in 2022 and beyond - Leadership has changed. Panellists Indy Sing Hothi CA, Buki Ishola, Natalie Campbell and Alison Cornwell CA discuss the new ways of leading in a modern era.

Bio: Alison is a highly experienced CFO having worked in senior international roles at Disney and then as CFO in 3 successive PE backed businesses in broadcasting, film distribution and production financing and latterly in film exhibition. She is a former Governor of the British Film Institute and is a director of the Scottish charity which operates the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Alison became ICAS Vice President in 2022 having been an ICAS Council Member since 2018.


Alastair Campbell, Mental Health Campaigner and Communicator

Session time: 2.15-2.30pm BST

Session description: “This is what a mentally healthy workplace looks like” - Alastair Campbell presents the shifts and strategies all businesses need to take to protect and nurture the mental health of their employees.

Bio: Alastair Campbell is a writer, communicator, strategist and mental health campaigner who is involved with mental health charities and causes, speaking about his own experience of depression, psychosis and addiction.
