Four easy steps to undertaking CPD:

  • Make time.
  • Keep an online record.
  • Make it a habit.
  • Explore the CPD opportunities available through ICAS.

It’s never too early to begin thinking about your 2022 CPD goals, and ICAS has a range of opportunities available to help you keep up to date and prepare you for the year ahead.

While it might be tempting to wait until later in the year before assessing CPD activities, it is a good idea to plan ahead and set out your development needs early.

Make time

‘I don’t have time’ is the phrase we hear the most when talking about continuing professional development (CPD) and we’re all guilty of using it. Whatever we do, work is busy, and everyone faces similar pressures.

Whether you work in an accounting, finance or business role, it’s these commonalities that connect us all. Sometimes we’re so busy hurtling through the tasks, meetings and priorities that we don’t stop to focus on our own personal and professional development.

There is a strong chance that someone else is making the time, and reaping the rewards.

Keeping an online record

Keeping your knowledge up-to-date, and making a commitment to undertake your CPD, are important aspects of your professional career.

Every year a portion of members are asked to provide evidence of their compliance. Our biggest source of development is the one that we’re immersed in – our everyday lives.

Whether it’s attending a course, joining a webinar or reading one of the many articles on icas.com, these activities all count as CPD. But we tend to fall down by not taking the time to record our learning activities.

We recommend that you keep an online record of your CPD during the year so that you can submit this easily if required to do so. Your CPD record can be in any format but as part of your CPD requirements, we recommend a pro-forma CPD planning and recording document to help you plan your CPD activities and record your progression through ICAS’ Professional Development Process.

Make it a habit

With ever-increasing commitments and tasks competing for our time, keeping CPD at the forefront of your mind can be a challenge.

Start small, build a plan, keep going, and find a process that works for you. To help, we have a wide range of professional development resources available to you, that include:

  • Face-to-face and online courses
  • Webinars and updates
  • Mentoring
  • Leadership Development Coaching
  • Events and conferences
  • and more...
