Meet KenMoving to Canada
Canada has formal reciprocal agreements with UK chartered bodies.
What you usually need to do
If you’re a fully qualified member in good standing:
- Apply through a Reciprocal Membership Agreement (RMA)
ICAS is recognised by CPA Canada which gives you a fast‑track route to Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) membership (subject to province).
Application and documents required
- Proof of qualification
- Letter of good standing
- Work experience evidence
Provincial requirements
It’s worth checking if the province you’ll be moving to is part of CPA Canada as it may not be covered by the reciprocal agreement.
Important nuances
- You often don’t need to redo full exams
- Audit/sign-off rights may require extra steps
- You can usually apply before moving to Canada
Moving to the USA
At time of writing, the USA does not have a universal reciprocal pathway for UK CAs.
Discussions between ICAS and relevant regulatory bodies in relation to a universal reciprocal pathway remain ongoing.
What you usually need to do
In order to sign off accounts in the USA, you'll need to gain a Certified Public Accountant licence (CPA). It's the most widely accepted licence recognised by employers around the country.
You'll also need to:
- Gain a high level of technical knowledge and professional competence through exams and experience requirements.
- Meet the licensing criteria set by the state in which you intend to practise.
It's important to note that each State has its own educational eligibility for examination and licensing requirements, plus state rules and regulations can be subject to frequent change.
We recommend that you contact the State Board of Accountancy where you wish to be licensed, before taking any exams.
Becoming a CPA
A CPA license represents one of the highest standards of professional competence in accounting. It’s a mark of achievement, credibility, and quality.
A vital resource to help you with the process is the National Association of State Accountancy (NASBA). It offers the information and support you need to achieve this respected professional qualification.
