One frequent question we get is: when will the audit course return? So, we’re pleased to say our 'keeping audit on the right track' course is back in a new, refreshed online format.

The course will be delivered in modular form, giving firms access to regular bite-sized updates on common audit monitoring findings, emerging issues, and a wide range of audit regulation topics. The course modules will cover all of the key areas of the original course, and more.

The course was originally delivered through half-day face-to-face sessions across Scotland before moving online during the pandemic. Development was temporarily paused in 2024; however, we’ve now restarted development and will be rolling out new modules throughout the year.

Is the course still mandatory?

Previously, all Responsible Individuals (RIs) were required to attend the course over a five-year cycle, and latterly, all Audit Compliance Principals were required to attend on a three-year cycle. Any new RIs had to attend within 12 months of being approved.

As audit-related CPD has evolved, firms now have access to a wider range of learning opportunities, and many firms subscribe to external providers to support auditors’ technical knowledge, professional skills and ethical standards.

As a result, the audit course will no longer be mandatory for all Responsible Individuals (RIs) as it previously was. Instead, it will form part of the range of CPD resources available to help firms meet their wider obligation to ensure that principals and employees carrying out audit work remain competent.

Where can I find the course?

The first module in the refreshed course is now available. In this introductory session, Lesley Byrne, Director of Monitoring, and Michael Lavender, Senior Reviewer, share an overview of the key findings from the 2025 monitoring visits.

You'll also find all of the existing course modules on root cause analysis and remedial action planning, with the new course content in one place.
