Chartered accountancy is a varied and rewarding career that develops and demands a varied range of skills and interests. We explain what’s involved and how to tell if you’re a match.

Choosing a career isn't about finding something you're already perfectly prepared for. It's about finding something that fits what you're good at, what interests you and what you'd like to learn.

And when it comes to choosing chartered accountancy, you don't have to be a maths genius, have studied accounting or have your whole career plan mapped out.

Let's look at some of the signs that it could be a match for you.

What do Chartered Accountants actually do?

Forget the stereotypes of someone doing endless sums or looking at spreadsheets all day. Chartered Accountants (CAs) are an elevated version of a standard accountant. They are trusted advisors who go beyond the numbers to help all kinds of businesses and organisations understand what's happening, solve problems, make smarter decisions and plan their futures.

That can mean working with numbers and data, but it can also mean working with clients and colleagues. It means understanding all aspects of business, using technology, investigating problems, developing strategies and explaining complicated information clearly.

Do my school or university subjects match?

You don’t need a degree, let alone an accounting degree, or any related previous experience to train as a Chartered Accountant.

You can start straight from school with any Highers or A Levels. And if you do have a degree, any subject qualifies for the graduate-entry route.

When hiring trainees, employers aren’t seeking the finished article, they’re interested in your potential, your positive approach and your willingness to learn.

Studied and enjoyed some of these subjects at school or uni? Then you might be a match.

Subject

Why it could be a match

Business or economics.

You're interested in why organisations succeed and how financial decisions get made.

Computing, science or technology.

You enjoy data, logic, systems and solving problems.

English, languages or humanities.

You're comfortable communicating big ideas, building arguments and looking at issues from different perspectives.

Maths.

You like numbers, patterns and working things out.

Almost anything else.

Your subject doesn't have to be finance or accounting related. What matters more are the skills and interests you're developing.

Do my skills match?

Chartered accountancy is a career with a variety of opportunities that demand and develop a variety of skills.

You like solving puzzles and problems

  • You: Enjoy figuring out how a puzzle fits together, how something works or why something isn't working and finding a better way to do it.
  • Why it matters: CAs are often asked to make sense of complex information and help organisations decide what to do next.

You have an eye for detail

  • You: Are the person who spots when something doesn't quite add up, like the total on a bill, dates in a travel plan, or a mistake in a group presentation.
  • Why it matters: Accuracy is very important for CAs, particularly when other people are relying on their work to make money decisions.

You can explain things

  • You: Are good at getting your point across, whether that's speaking, writing or presenting, when hanging out with friends, with family or in a debate.
  • Why it matters: For a CA, understanding an issue is only half the job. They often need to explain it to other people, such as their clients or colleagues.

You like working with people

  • You: Would rather be around other people, such as friends, classmates, or colleagues at your part-time job, than spend every day alone.
  • Why it matters: CAs spend as much time working with people as they do with numbers. This is a job that can get you out from behind your desk and involve plenty of teamwork and interaction.

You can get organised

  • You: Can manage different priorities and keep moving towards a deadline. Your friends can rely on you to be in control of things like social plans and bills for your flat.
  • Why it matters: CAs need to organise data, information and tasks, and as a CA student you’ll have to keep yourself organised balancing work with study.
