Making Tax Digital

Digital world

Making Tax Digital is a key part of the government’s plans to make it easier for individuals and businesses to get their tax right and keep on top of their affairs.

ICAS refreshes its MTD strategy

MTD has not gone away, and there is a lot of work to do before MTD for VAT becomes mandatory from April 2019.

With an MTD for business ITSA pilot underway and a VAT pilot imminent there is much going on behind the scenes. Now is the time to be involved to shape the digital future of tax. With this in mind, ICAS has updated its Making Tax Digital policy and sets out a refreshed approach in the light of the revised HMRC timeline.

Key ICAS policy positions are:

  • Digital facilities should be accessible to all on the terms that they want
  • Digital services should be so good that everyone wants to use them
  • ICAS members are well placed to encourage and support digital use where appropriate

While ICAS broadly supports HMRC’s digital vision, digital should not be mandatory for everyone. Alternative, non-digital channels should be available and adequate resourcing is needed for HMRC to deliver the best service.

The aim should be to create a system that taxpayers want to use, and Agent Services must be made available at the same time or ahead of services for individuals and businesses so that agents can properly support their clients.
