The Team

Lesley Byrne BAcc CA:  Director of Regulatory Monitoring

Lesley heads up the Audit Monitoring Unit. She was previously a Senior Reviewer in audit monitoring and quality review with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ireland and prior to that an Inspector in the Joint Monitoring Unit (employed by ICAEW) conducting audit and financial services monitoring visits, before being tasked with setting up the ICAS monitoring unit at the end of 2004.

Lesley's previous audit experience came from her years with Ernst & Young and from previous small firm experience. Lesley has more than 14 years senior experience in audit monitoring. Lesley has also lectured in auditing and financial reporting subjects with BPP and has written various auditing articles in the past.

Kenneth Oliver LLB (Hons) CA: Assistant Director, Audit and Practice Monitoring

Kenneth Oliver obtained significant audit experience in a wide range of industry and regulatory sectors during his years with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Glasgow, with a primary focus on small and middle market clients, pension schemes and charities. Kenneth has acquired considerable client service experience in the preparation of financial statements, the provision of taxation services and acting in an advisory role to clients ranging from small businesses to larger listed companies. Kenneth has also been heavily involved in audit quality projects in the United Kingdom and in the United States of America and in delivering advanced training courses to senior levels of practice and industry staff.

Russell Leitch BAcc CA:  Senior Audit and Practice Monitoring Reviewer

Russell's audit experience comes from his years spent at Wylie & Bisset LLP in Glasgow, where he obtained significant experience in the audit of small and medium sized entities, and in a wide range of regulatory sectors including charities, further education and pension schemes.

Lynne Bannan: Visit Co-ordinator, Audit Monitoring & Practice Monitoring

Lynne Bannan is the Audit Monitoring team's Visit Co-ordinator and Lynne manages the administration of the visit process, along with the administration for the Practice Monitoring team.  
Lynne has had over 19 years administrative and PA experience, including having worked for a number of professional firms, including accountancy, legal and surveyor firms.

The Insolvency Team

Insolvency monitoring and regulation sits within the ICAS Regulatory Monitoring Department of the Regulation Division. The Insolvency Monitoring team are all Chartered Accountants and qualified Insolvency Practitioners with extensive experience gained in all areas of personal and corporate insolvency.

Dorren Lurring BAcc CA MABRP Assistant Director Insolvency Monitoring & Regulation

 

Dorren qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1994 and moved straight into the field of corporate recovery and insolvency.  She subsequently passed the examinations of the Joint Insolvency Exam Board and is a licenced insolvency practitioner.  Dorren has held management positions in professional practice firms since passing her insolvency examinations.  In September 2008 Dorren joined ICAS as an Insolvency Monitor.

Derek Wilson BAdmin CA, Senior Insolvency Monitoring Reviewer 

 

Derek qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1987.  On qualifying he specialised in corporate recovery and personal insolvency, obtaining his Insolvency Permit in 1990.  Derek has gained experience in all aspects of insolvency during his career.  He has held senior positions with a number of firms, was a sole practitioner for a number of years and latterly Director of Insolvency Services with an Insolvency and Debt Solution Company.   In March 2011 Derek joined ICAS as an Insolvency Monitor.

Insolvency Manager - Caroline Morris

Caroline joined ICAS in 1997 as a member of the Members Services Department where she was based for 7 years before moving to the Regulation & Compliance Insolvency Department in 2004. Before joining ICAS Caroline held high profile positions in the then Scottish Office, now known as the Scottish Government.

Lesley leads the strategy and management of the Regulatory Monitoring section.

The Practice Monitoring team

The Practice Monitoring team has extensive experience gained in all areas of general practice, including tax, accounting for owner managed businesses, charity accounting, audit, corporate finance and insolvency. Additionally, as a number of practising certificate holders are often peripatetic directors, we have reviewers who have experience of work outwith traditional practice too. Brief biographies of the team members are set out below.

Lesley has also lectured in auditing, financial reporting and other accountancy subjects with BPP and has written various technical articles in the past. Lesley leads the strategy and management of the Regulatory Monitoring team.

Avril McArthur BAcc CA - Senior Reviewer

Avril joined ICAS in October 1999 as a Quality Reviewer. Prior to joining the Institute,
Avril worked as an Audit & Accounts Manager with both Alexander Sloan and Grant Thornton
and carried out her CA training at Alexander Sloan. She became a member of ICAS in 1994.

Alasdair Millar BA CA - Senior Reviewer

Alasdair joined ICAS in September 2005 as a Quality Reviewer. Prior to joining the Institute, Alasdair held a number of positions within the financial services and plant  hire industries. Prior to his career outside general practice, he worked with Grant Thornton  as a Corporate Finance Manager and completed his CA training with Geoghegan & Co in Edinburgh.
He became a member of ICAS in 1994.

Practising units which only conduct insolvency related work may have their Practice Monitoring visit conducted by a member of the insolvency monitoring team.

Lynne joined ICAS in September 2007 and splits her time as a Co-ordinator for both the Audit Monitoring and Practice Monitoring departments. Prior to joining the Institute, Lynne held various positions within legal and surveying firms.
