Meet the 2018 One Young CA judges
With the search underway for the ICAS One Young CA 2018, held in association with Investec Click & Invest, we meet the diverse and talented group of CAs and industry leaders who make up this year's expert judging panel.
Bringing a wealth of experience and influence in a variety of different sectors to the table, these are the professional kingpins who will single out the most promising and inspiring young members of ICAS.
The 2018 One Young CA Judges
Elizabeth Gammie CA
Professor of Accounting, Robert Gordon University
Elizabeth Gammie is a Professor of Accounting at the Robert Gordon University, where she is also Head of the Aberdeen Business School. She trained with Ernst and Whinney in the Aberdeen office and specialised in tax on qualification. She subsequently moved into academia and now has over 25 years’ experience in the Higher Education sector. Over the years she has developed her career by undertaking a part-time PhD, developing a very successful Accounting and Finance undergraduate degree, building a research portfolio, heading up the Department of Accounting and Finance and, from 2016, taking on the role as Head of School.
She has been involved with many ICAS Boards and Committees, including various stints with the local Area Committee, chairing the Student Education Committee, sitting on the Qualification Board, the TPE Exam Board, the Technical Policy Board and, perhaps most notably, on the ICAS Council for 6 years. She currently sits on the International Accounting Education Standards Board, is a Trustee of the ICAS Foundation, a member of the ICAS Audit Committee, a Trustee of the RDA Aberdeen group, a Governor of St Margaret’s School for Girls and chairs the Grampian Area Committee.
Cara Haffey CA
PwC Deals Partner - UK Leader of Industrial Manufacturing & Automotive
Cara trained in Glasgow and has spent time working in Assurance and Corporate Finance with PwC. She currently leads PwC's Manufacturing & Automotive teams and spends all her time advising industrial clients on strategy, options, acquisitions and disposals. She is a past winner of Scotland's Emerging Dealmaker of the Year and was an ICAS prize winner. She is a Mum to two children and loves to be outdoors when not at work.
Jonny Jacobs CA
One Young CA 2017
Strategy & Transformation Director, pladis
Jonny is passionate about the development of fellow young professionals and growing as a leader to encourage the best from those around him. This was an attitude he took to Bogotá, Colombia when representing ICAS at the One Young World Summit in 2017.
Jonny is also a Trustee of UK charity Aspire, providing support to victims of spinal injuries. He advocates the value of the CA qualification and ICAS membership that has afforded him the skills to further causes he cares about as part of his professional journey.
Jamie Mumford-Raine CA
Associate Manager, BP
Jamie is an Associate Manager within the Mergers & Acquisitions team at BP. He has been with the company since graduating from Birmingham University in 2006 and completed his CA training while on the BP Finance graduate scheme. Jamie currently sits on the ICAS Members Board and London Area Committee where he plays an active role trying to promote younger member engagement.
Jamie began his career in the Upstream side of the business, supporting finance teams in Algeria, Libya and India, before focusing on more commercially focused positions back in the UK. He spent 3 years working in a central strategy and business development role in Castrol, before moving to the Downstream segment, supporting BP’s new market entries in retail and most recently moving to group M&A.
Katherine Ritchie CA
Operational Transaction Services, EY
Katherine is a Manager within EY’s Operational Transaction team, working across the deal lifecycle on acquisitions, disposals, integrations and restructuring assignments throughout the world. Katherine was a top 35 CA under 35 finalist in the leadership category of the 2016 One Young CA awards.
Katherine qualified as a CA with EY in 2015. She is a founding member of the ICAS Young Leaders Board and joined the ICAS Members Board in 2018.
Fiona Robertson CA
Assistant Director, Campbell Dallas
Fiona is an Assistant Director in Campbell Dallas’ Corporate Finance Team. Fiona has significant experience in both corporate finance and corporate restructuring & advisory. Specialising in lead advisory assignments, Fiona has experience in all aspects of corporate finance work including acquisitions, disposals, financial modelling and strategic reviews, with significant transaction credentials in the oil and gas industry, both in the UK and the Middle East. Fiona has worked with a range of clients including small owner-managed businesses, private equity firms and companies with a turnover of more than £250m.
Derek Treanor CA
Head of Business Risk & Deputy Chief Risk Officer, Clydesdale Bank
Derek qualified as a CA in 1990 and spent a period of time in Professional Practice, working in Corporate Recovery, before joining Clydesdale Bank PLC in 1995. His career at Clydesdale Bank has been diverse and includes time spent in areas such as front-line relationship management; Finance; Internal Audit; Credit Risk; and Risk Management. He is currently the Head of Business Risk & Deputy Chief Risk Officer for Clydesdale Bank.
John Watson CA
CEO, Crosswind Developments Ltd
John joined Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) as an Operating Principal in 2013 and Chief Commercial Officer of their investment, Edinburgh Airport Limited, leading the revenue and capital projects teams. John works with a number of investments worldwide and is CEO of Crosswind Developments Ltd.
Prior to joining GIP, he was Managing Director of Lloyds Banking Group’s $50bn SME Lending business during the banking liquidity crisis. John was also a founding Board Director of the Business Growth Fund plc. After ICAS qualification with PwC Corporate Finance, John joined 3i plc. He has subsequently held a number of executive and non-executive positions globally.
With over 20 years of experience, he has a BEng Mechanical Design Engineering and an MSc IT from University of Glasgow. John is Vice President of the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, a Trustee at the Saltire Foundation, Non-Executive Director of the Institute of Directors, sits on the ICAS Members Board and is Chair of the Edinburgh and Lothian Members Board.
