Key points:

  • Indy won the title of One Young CA 2015.
  • Since then, he has travelled the world and worked with international organisations to raise funds and awareness of humanitarian causes.
  • Being One Young CA has given him a platform to connect with and inspire fellow CAs.

Eleanor O’Neill speaks to 2015 One Young CA Indy Hothi about giving back to the CA community and the benefits of a platform to speak up.

Since winning the title of One Young CA, Indy has had a wedding, travelled the globe, worked with the UK Government and taken steps to set up his own practice.

“In the wake of the EU referendum result, I had the opportunity to work as a technology advisor in the Department for International Trade (DIT) to promote the UK as a desirable investment location,” he explained. “I also completed my Post Graduate studies at the Cambridge Judge Business School.

“After marrying my wonderful wife in 2017, we took a 12-month career break to travel the world. It was an incredible opportunity and a truly life-changing experience. We travelled across Asia and camped all over the African continent. I can’t think of a better way to create a strong foundation for our marriage!

“Since returning, I’ve pursued a more entrepreneurial path and am currently setting up my own small consultancy practice.

“ICAS and the wider CA community have been with me every step of the way as I’ve reached these milestones. Whether that’s getting advice from fellow CAs or looking to ICAS as a body for technical guidance. One of the biggest benefits of being One Young CA has been the ability to build and forge new relationships with my peers.”

We are a powerful business community embedded in all industries and geographies, providing a wealth of information and support.

Indy has become a champion for ICAS initiatives and promoting the value of the qualification.

“I have had the opportunity to ‘give back’ to the ICAS community by providing advice to potential CAs and supporting them with their career journey,” he said.

“The CA is a sign of competence, integrity and trust. We are a powerful business community embedded in all industries and geographies, providing a wealth of information and support where needed.

“All around the world, we are leading social initiatives which make the world a better place for everyone. That’s why I’m Proud to be a CA.”

He had further opportunities to connect with global influencers while representing ICAS at the 2015 One Young World Summit in Bangkok, Thailand.

“One Young World brings together some of the best talent from all around the world to discuss some of the most pressing issues that society is facing today,” Indy commented.

“The ability to network with like-minded individuals and forge relationships led me to collaborate with individuals that I still work with today, four years on.

“It really brings home the potential for the accountancy profession as a whole to have a say in devising solutions to tackle global issues. The One Young CA title has given me a platform to talk about those topics I’m passionate about.”

Put yourself forward! Don’t let doubts or worries get in the way. We’re all leading and pioneering in our own different ways.

Indy is a Trustee of disaster and humanitarian relief organisation Khalsa Aid. His efforts with the charity have taken him to the front line of natural disasters and led to him informing and influencing topics in the NGO sector.

He is also a Co-Founder of arts-based social enterprise Hothi & Othi and has worked with One Young World, UNHCR and Relief International in recent years to support initiatives for refugees.

For Young CAs with causes close to their hearts, he encourages taking the chance to become the next One Young CA.

“Put yourself forward! Don’t let doubts or worries get in the way. If you’re leading the way in your career, in entrepreneurship or in the not-for-profit sector – nominate yourself! If you know a CA leading discussions in mental health, diversity or social impact – nominate them!

“We’re all leading and pioneering in our own different ways. Try to take to take stock of what you’ve accomplished thus far and put yourself forward."
