In this issue

  • In this issue, we hear from one of the world’s most trusted voices in technological innovation, Azeem Azhar, who explains what rapid digitalisation has in store for CAs.
  • In his final column as ICAS President, Bruce Pritchard CA, discusses the challenges and opportunities for accountancy and the future direction of the profession.
  • Dame Stephanie Shirley CH set up one of Britain’s first tech businesses, grew it into a multi-billion-pound enterprise – then gave away her fortune. She talks to Lysanne Currie about resilience, recessions and her regret at not bringing in an FD for 25 years.
  • Susanne Chishti, CEO of specialist investor network Fintech Circle, tells Kitty Finstad how she identifies promising start-ups – and how CAs can use fintech solutions to boost their offering.
  • It recently hosted its first wedding, with a guest list of thousands. It may soon see CAs send digital avatars to clients’ virtual offices. But will the metaverse really reshape business or be just a niche preserve of gamers?
  • There is no shortage of accountancy software on offer – all promising to simplify financial processes. Ryan Herman meets the sector experts to learn more – and to see how CAs can continue to provide value in a digital world.

In this month’s edition of CA magazine and through the lens of our Finance+ Technology theme, we will be exploring the latest technological innovations and upgrades as we speak to thought leaders and industry experts who will provide insight into how the worlds of accountancy and business are being transformed for tomorrow.

The world has changed since the last edition of CA magazine. The invasion of Ukraine places millions of lives in grave danger and challenges the livelihood of millions more. The war is greatly concerning to ICAS and we are committed to assisting our members whose lives and work are affected. We have created a Ukrainian crisis hub on icas.com with a full list of resources and support.

CAs have an ethical duty to act in the public interest and in line with incoming legislation. In our transformed world, that now takes the form of complying with financial and trade sanctions on Russia and Belarus. This is a new, but necessary, challenge for CAs. And if you need to speak up, or notice something that doesn’t feel quite right, ICAS is partnered with whistleblowing service Protect to offer CAs independent advice.

This month, CA magazine focuses on technology. Wave after wave of software has changed the way CAs work, inviting deeper thought about the role of the accountant in business. It’s heartening to see CAs embraced as trusted advisers, offering expert insight informed by business and financial acumen.

ICAS is evolving, too, taking a digital-first approach to the provision of services. The latest initiative is Career Connections – a mentoring platform that connects members and students according to their background and interests.

Being digital first also means enabling all members, wherever they are based, to get involved with ICAS online. There are several board and committee vacancies available and I’d encourage members to get involved.

And the ICAS annual general meeting takes place on 29 April. You can register to attend digitally – and cast your vote for the 2022-23 office bearers – below.
