ICAS in association with the Chartered Banker Institute is delighted to invite you to ‘The Power of One’ Edinburgh event.
In November 2015 ICAS launched its ‘The Power of One’ campaign, aiming to help re-establish ethics at the core of business practices and rebuild public trust in business.
‘The Power of One’ motif highlights that it is the duty of each individual Chartered Accountant to be personally responsible for upholding the highest standards of ethical behaviour throughout their career. However, it is not always easy to do “the right thing” - ethical leadership requires moral courage.
At this event, Peter Holmes, the Deloitte Ethics partner, will introduce the speakers.
James Barbour, ICAS Director, Technical Policy will provide insight into ‘The Power of One’ initiative.
David Miller, Ph.D., Director, Princeton University Faith and Work Initiative, and Giles Cuthbert, Managing Director, Chartered Banker Institute, will discuss the importance of business ethics.
“Weakness of will” will also be explored - how the absence of moral courage may lead to poor decisions and behaviours, even when individuals know what the “right” course of action should be.
The speakers will provide practical insights and tools to assist in approaching ethical problems.

David W. Miller Ph.D.
Director, Princeton University Faith & Work Initiative, Associate Research Scholar and Lecturer
Since 2008, David has been on the faculty of Princeton University, serving as Director of the Princeton University Faith & Work Initiative, as a Professional Specialist, and Lecturer specializing in business ethics. Prior to this, he was at Yale University for five years, where he served as the Executive Director of the Yale Center for Faith & Culture, and taught at both Yale School of Management and Yale Divinity School.
Prior to academia, David lived and worked in London for eight years, where he was a partner in a private equity firm that specialised in international investment management, corporate finance, and mergers and acquisitions. Before that he was a senior executive and director of the securities services and global custody division of HSBC Group. He moved to London as the managing director of the European operations of State Street Bank and Trust, a leading US securities services bank. He started his management career in the US, working for IBM for eight years in a variety of sales and marketing management positions. After his corporate experience, he entered academia, receiving his M.Div. and a Ph.D. in ethics from Princeton Theological Seminary. In addition to his academic work, he advises CEOs and C-Suite executives on matters pertaining to ethics, leadership, and culture.
Managing Director, Chartered Banker Institute
Giles is Managing Director at the Chartered Banker Institute, a broad role with executive responsibility for professional learning and development, accreditation, qualifications development, business development and learning partnerships. He has around 20 years' experience in the arena of professional education and professional standards, initially with the IFS School of Finance and, for the past 12 years, with the Chartered Banker Institute. He has led a very wide range of education projects to significantly diversify the work of the Chartered Banker Institute, developing major strategic programmes to diverse areas of the banking industry around the globe. In particular, he has specialised in developing a wide range of bespoke professional education programmes for banks, coupled with highly innovative accreditation services.
Giles led the initial internationalisation of the Institute's work, in particular working with the microfinance community in 26 countries across Africa. He has also developed a wide range of regulatory programmes, and courses for other financial institutions including credit unions and building societies.
Independence and Ethics Partner, Deloitte UK
Peter is the Independence and Ethics Partner of the Deloitte UK firm. As well as Ethics, Peter is responsible for the Audit Independence and Conflicts of Interest functions in the firm. Peter is also Managing Director of Deloitte’s Global Risk Management for Financial Advisory Services which provides him with exposure to business cultures worldwide.
Director, Technical Policy, ICAS
James is the Director, Technical Policy within ICAS and has worked for the Institute since July 1999. James qualified as a CA in 1996 having trained with the Glasgow office of a Group A firm. He then spent a further period in general practice (primarily audit) with one of Scotland’s largest independent firms before joining the Institute. James oversees the work of several ICAS technical committees including the Accounting Standards, Audit and Assurance, Business Policy, Charities, Corporate Reporting, Pensions, Public Sector and Sustainability. He is also responsible for the newly formed ICAS Ethics Board and is the lead on all matters connected with The Power of One initiative. Indeed, James gave presentations on this topic to the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA) and its Consultative Advisory Group in March.
