Professor Norman Murray
Chair, ICAS Ethics Committee
Mr Norman L Murray is Chairman of premium international spirits company The Edrington Group Limited.
He is a past President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, and a past Chairman of the British Venture Capital Association. Norman also chaired the independent committee charged with establishing Audit Firm Governance Code, published by the Financial Reporting Council in 2010.
Norman qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Arthur Young McLelland Moores, now EY in Edinburgh, and then worked with Peat Marwick Mitchell, now KPMG, in Hong Kong. He then worked in the venture capital industry with RBS, Charterhouse, Morgan Grenfell and Deutsche Bank - being a co-founder of Morgan Grenfell Private Equity and a Director of Morgan Grenfell Asset Management.
Norman was Chairman of international oil services company Petrofac Limited, and of the oil exploration and production company, Cairn Energy plc, both FTSE 100 companies. He was also Deputy Chairman of Cairn India Limited, the Senior Independent Director at Robert Wiseman Dairies plc and Greene King plc. He also served on the Boards of Glasgow Income Trust, Penta Capital Partners and Bristow Helicopter Group.
He was a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland’s Research Committee which published Making Corporate Reports Valuable and was Chairman of the Institute's Public Sector Task Force which published Accounting for Public Service-Towards a New Reporting Framework.
Norman was a Governor and Chairman of the Investment Committee at St Columba's Hospice, Chairman of the Governing Council at George Watson's College Edinburgh and is currently an Honorary Professor at Heriot-Watt University. He is a graduate of Heriot-Watt University and graduated from the Programme for Management Development at the Harvard Business School in 1987. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2015.
Chief Executive, ICAS
Anton Colella became Chief Executive of ICAS in October 2006.
Previously he was the Chief Executive of the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), from December 2003 to October 2006, following a period as Director of Qualifications.
He was elected Chair of the Global Accounting Alliance (GAA) in November 2011. The GAA has around one million members in 165 countries, and represents a collection of leading institutes from around the world. Anton became an Honorary Professor of Education at the University of Glasgow in 2012 and has been a member of the University’s Adam Smith Business School Advisory Board since 2011. He received an honorary Doctorate from BPP University in 2014.
Anton is a Trustee of Columba 1400, an award winning social enterprise and charity to help young people realise their potential, a Trustee of the Scottish International Education Trust (SIET) which offers financial assistance to individuals for further education and training and is Chairman of the Executive Board of the Scottish Catholic Education Service.
A graduate of the University of Stirling, Anton’s career began as a teacher of Religious Education. Before joining the SQA he was Depute Head Teacher at St Margaret Mary’s Secondary School in Glasgow.
Anton lives in Glasgow and his main interests are his family, rugby, eating out and spending time in the Highlands of Scotland.
