Lyndsay Henderson CA, founder of Stellation Ltd, illuminates her journey from qualifying with ICAS to business ownership.

After completing her maths degree at the University of Edinburgh, Lyndsay knew she wanted to continue using her analytical and problem-solving skills and apply them to the business world.

“I decided to seek some practical training and experience which would give me a sound platform from which to build a career,” she said, “A graduate trainee role studying for a CA qualification seemed like a great option.

“I think the CA qualification is exceptional and, combined with a great training firm, it gives you a solid business grounding which you can take anywhere.

“Undertaking more study after school and university can be daunting and the exams are tough but it’s worth the effort and once you have the qualification you can do anything!”

She trained with KPMG and qualified as a CA in 2006, and joined TalkTalk Telecom Group plc in 2009 as the Group Finance Reporting Manager, where she was involved with a broad range of finance activities, including financial control, management reporting and some transformation projects.

I decided to set up Stellation because I wanted to have more flexibility over my working life.

Her determination and hard work led to her being promoted to Head of Group Accounting in 2012, and in May 2016, she realised a dream by launching her own business, Stellation Ltd.

"I decided to set up Stellation because I wanted to have more flexibility over my working life”, she explained, “and so I could work with SMEs to get directly involved in advising on strategy and success.

“I’ve found ICAS really supportive as I’ve been through the process of setting up my own practice.”

The company caters to businesses looking for part-time or interim finance director solutions and helps SMEs and early stage enterprises with strategic financial advice and management on a basis that suits their business model.

As well as starting her own business, Lyndsay took a role as CFO with RPR Professional Recruitment, where she leads their financial operations aligned with strategic goals, and an Associate role with Holy Brook Associates.

The Reading-based consultancy, training and events organisation provides advice to business clients on financial issues, growth management and solutions.

“Without the CA qualification, I wouldn’t be where I am today. All my roles have been really diverse and challenging which has definitely kept things interesting.”
