Be inspired and find your purpose: Young CAs Summit 2018
"Be prepared to be inspired and use that inspiration to make a difference." With these words ICAS President Sandy Manson CA opened the Young CAs Summit on 21 June 2018.
Young CAs joined inspirational speakers and fellow members for a day of thought leadership and celebrating success in the iconic 'Cheesegrater' Leadenhall Building in the heart of London, held in association with Investec Click & Invest.
ICAS CEO Bruce Cartwright CA said: "This is a chance for you all to network, to celebrate your success, and to celebrate what it means to be a CA. This is a community, it is a network and a professional body, but also a place to form friendships that stay with you for life."
Bruce Walker, Co-Founder of FutureX and Founder of WeAreTheFuture, was the event's keynote speaker, describing his unprecedented career journey that, at the age of 23, has already seen him rub shoulders with key players at the likes of Apple, Google, Mastercard and Virgin.
He asked the audience: "How do you want to engage with work and with life?"
CAs challenging the status quo
Two panels of influential CAs shared their stories throughout the day. The first, Igniting Your Entrepreneurial Spark, featured:
- Angela Malik CA, Programme Director at Gather & Gather;
- Kimberley Oliver CA, Director of Xenith Financial Consulting Limited;
- Paul Thomson CA, Founder of Scottish American; and
- Joel Watt CA, Co-Founder of Jack Taylor.
The key message was that, if you find something that you are passionate about, pursuing it as an entrepreneurial venture is worth the risk. Each of the panellists highlighted the importance of loving what you do and how that becomes its own drive and motivation to succeed.
The second panel, discussing Unleashing Innovation, included:
- Ricky Munday CA, Former Head of Corporate Services with the British Antarctic Survey and successful Mount Everest summiter;
- Tom Parkinson CA, CFO of SteamaCo; and
- Sumati Sharma CA, VP of Special Projects at Virgin Atlantic.
They concluded that innovation is essential to all industries at all levels, but that it means something different to everyone. Having the ability and privilege to drive change also means having a responsibility to make a positive impact in what you do.
Making a connection
Learning how to network, both in person and online, is a vital part of engaging with the modern world and driving career progression.
He encouraged CAs to get to know their audience and not be afraid to engage and get involved with the big issues of the day.
