In today's connected, on-demand world – how relevant is radio to the business world? Steven Fullerton rounds up the best podcasts for CAs.

For almost 90 years, the BBC has broadcast over the airwaves, but is radio approaching an extinction level event, or will it evolve?

Enter podcasts.

The name, podcasts, may be off-putting, but think of it as you would an individual radio show. Unlike traditional radio though, its on demand. You subscribe for free, and when new episodes are released, your device automatically downloads them. Simple.

Given that the Pod in podcasting is in reference to iPod, it comes as no surprise that your apple devices come pre-installed with a dedicated Podcasts app. You can manage subscriptions, find new podcasts, and check what new shows have downloaded for you. Google will soon release a similar app for android users, until then you can download a player from a third party.

Large networks such as the BBC and NPR now publish most radio shows after they have broadcast (similar to iPlayer for TV) as podcasts. What's great about this is you now have the option to subscribe to just the shows you like, and you can listen at any time.

As with everything online, podcast are accessible for content creators. For every niche, there will be a podcast. Whilst our focus is on business and accountancy related podcasts, some hugely popular podcasts have had topics such as real-life murder mysteries and 4 interesting facts from the QI elves.
