Sir Brian Souter nominated to be Vice-President of ICAS

30 March 2015

Sir Brian Souter CA is the sole nominee to become Vice-President of ICAS in April 2015. This would put him in line to become the Institute's President in 2017.

Sir Brian is one of the UK's best known entrepreneurs. He is the chairman and co-founder of Stagecoach Group, one of the world's leading transport companies.

It was founded by Sir Brian and his sister Ann Gloag with two buses in 1980 and now has a market capitalisation of just under £2 billion. He was the Group's Chief Executive until May 2013.

Sir Brian qualified as a Chartered Accountant (CA) in 1984 after training with Arthur Andersen in Glasgow.

Sir Brian said: "This is a unique opportunity for me to repay some of the debt I owe to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland for the excellent training I received as a young man and I hope I will be able to encourage more young people to enter the profession.

"Since I have always enjoyed working with numbers and dealing with people, my choice or vocation as a Chartered Accountant seemed logical."

Sir Brian is the sole nominee of the ICAS Council to become Vice-President in April 2015. If elected, it is likely that he would succeed the current Deputy President, Jim Pettigrew CA, and the current Vice-President, Ken McHattie CA, to become ICAS President in April 2017.

Where required ICAS Council elections are held with the results announced at the Annual General Meeting. This year's ICAS AGM takes place on 24 April 2015.
