Tributes are paid to the CAs who have recently passed away.

John Stewart Baird CA

John Stewart Baird CA, who lived in Tadworth, died on 14 August 2016 aged 73.

He was born on 8 June 1943 and admitted to membership on 28 November 1967. After qualifying, Mr Baird took a position with Pannell Fitzpatrick & Co, was later a partner in its Sierra Leone office and subsequently managing partner of the firm’s Edinburgh practice. Lattery he was a sole practitioner.

Mr Baird is a recipient of the Order of the Polar Star, a Swedish order of chivalry awarded to foreign nationals for “civic merits, for devotion to duty, for science, literary, learned and useful works and for new and beneficial institutions”.

Hugh John Dickson CA

Hugh John Dickson CA, who lived in Bolton, died on 14 May 2014 aged 75.

He was born on 14 April 1939 and admitted to membership on 25 November 1963. After qualifying Mr Dickson took a position with the Scottish Gas Board, was later finance officer at Hong Kong Polytechnic, and, prior to retirement, was bursar at The University of the South Pacific, Fiji.

William Gray Grant CA

William Gray Grant CA, who lived in Carnoustie, died on 17 August 2016 aged 90.

He was born on 11 June 1926 and admitted to membership on 30 March 1955. After completing his apprenticeship with RC Thomson & Murdoch, Mr Grant took a position with SMT Sales & Services Co Ltd, was later chief accountant at DJ Ogilvie (Builders) Ltd, and, prior to retirement, was with Kidsons Impey.

Maureen Beatrice Hepburn MA MBA CA

Maureen Beatrice Hepburn MA MBA CA, who lived in Inverurie, died on 11 February 2016 aged 50.

She was born on 3 November 1965 and admitted to membership on 2 March 1990. After qualifying, Mrs Hepburn took a position as a financial analyst at Occidental Petroleum Ltd, was later finance director at Grampian Country Food Group, and latterly was managing director at Envireneer R&D Ltd.

John Desmond McCafferty BA CA

John Desmond McCafferty BA CA, who lived in Paris, died on 21 July 2016 aged 73.

He was born on 25 February 1943 and admitted to membership on 16 October 1975. After completing his apprenticeship with Coopers & Lybrand, Mr McCafferty took a position at ET Campbell, was later a professor of international business, and prior to retirement a professor of English.

Douglas John Odam BA CA

Douglas John Odam BA CA, who lived in Bishopton, has died aged 66.

He was born on 16 May 1950 and admitted to membership on 29 November 1974, He completed his apprenticeship with Touche Ross & Co.

Mr Odam was later chief accountant at Scottish Television plc, financial director of Rangers Football Club plc, and, prior to retirement, was financial director of Ireland Alloys (Holdings) Ltd.

Hung Sham Soo BA CA

Hung Sham Soo BA CA, who lived in Hong Kong, died on 3 June 2016 aged 86.

He was born on 8 September 1929 and admitted to membership on 20 November 1964. After completing his apprenticeship with Walker & Walker, Mr Soo took a position with Wong, Tan & Co, and prior to retirement was the sole proprietor of Soo Pui Chen & Co.

James Alexander Hay Tawse CA

James Alexander Hay Tawse CA, who lived in Rio de Janeiro, died on 7 August 2016 aged 94.

He was born on 8 February 1922 and admitted to membership on 30 March 1955. After completing his apprenticeship with WD Johnston & Carmichael, Mr Tawse took a position at Laurits Lachmann SA, and prior to retirement was with Light Serviços de Eletricidade SA.
