Jonathan Andrew Harvey CA remembered

Tributes have been paid to Jonathan Andrew Harvey CA, former president of the National Society of Allied & Independent Funeral Directors, who died on 26 March 2015, aged 67.

Born on 17 October 1947 and a graduate of Glasgow University, Harvey was exam qualified in Glasgow in 1975 and admitted to membership in December 1975. A talented and successful entrepreneur, he attracted a broad range of clients, particularly in showbiz and the media and had business interests that included Lismor Records, music publishing and telecommunications.

Harvey was the third generation to take over the family business, Jonathan Harvey Funeral Directors, which became the largest independent family funeral company in Glasgow. In 1989, with his friend and fellow CA Gordon Kee, Harvey founded Golden Charter, providing the independent sector with a pre-paid funeral plan to compete with that of the Co-op, Dignity and Great Southern Group. Golden Charter is now the largest funeral plan provider in the UK.

In 2001 Harvey arrived at a unique solution to the perennial problem of unclaimed ashes. He attracted national media coverage by committing 35 sets of unclaimed ashes to the River Clyde in a multi-denominational service on the river.

Gordon Kee's untimely death from oesophageal cancer in 2002 was a great blow to Harvey. After much soul searching, following a quadruple heart bypass and subsequent battle with MRSA, he sold Jonathan Harvey in 2003.

A qualified pilot, diver, coastal sailing skipper and rally-driving navigator, Harvey achieved much in his life. Nevertheless, he described becoming a CA as his most cherished and valued qualification.

Harvey will be greatly missed by all who knew him, especially his wife Linda, daughters Ainsley, Ashley and Andrea, from his marriage to Ailsa, sister Rosemary, and his extended family including grandchildren, nephews and niece.
