Tributes are paid to the CAs who have recently passed away.
James Robert Duncan Campbell CA
Tributes have been paid to James Robert Duncan Campbell CA, who lived in Ardrossan and died on 27 January 2016, aged 90.
Known as Duncan, he was born on 13 April 1925 in Edinburgh and attended the city’s Royal High School. At the outbreak of World War II he became a motorcycle messenger and joined the Air Training Corps before embarking on a law degree at Edinburgh University alongside his CA apprenticeship.
After qualification Mr Campbell took a post with the Hydro Board before returning to private professional practice to build up his own firm in the Edinburgh area. A move to Millport followed in 1971, where as town clerk he had the task of reorganising the council’s finances.
With the regionalisation of the local councils in 1975, Mr Campbell relocated to Irvine as part of the staff of the North Ayrshire region in the role of depute finance director. In the same year he also published his first book, Millport and the Cumbraes: A History and Guide and after retirement in 1988 he authored nine more books on various historical themes.
A beloved family man, he was the husband of the late Betty, father of Judy, Angus and Christine and grandpa to Catriona, Innes, Callum and Dougie.
David McClure Gillies CA
David McClure Gillies CA, who lived in Glasgow, died on 4 February 2016 aged 76. He was born on 30 March 1939 and admitted to membership on 25 November 1963. After qualifying with Thomson McLintock & Co, Mr Gillies took a position at Robertson, Davies & Co, was later director and secretary at Clan Hotels, and prior to retirement was internal auditor at the Scottish Mutual Assurance Society.
Michael Christopher Gorman CA
Michael Christopher Gorman CA, who lived in Woking, died on 22 February 2016 aged 85. He was born on 5 November 1930 and admitted to membership on 16 September 1955. Mr Gorman was finance director at The Financial Times Ltd, and prior to retirement was group pensions manager at Pearson Plc.
Robert Kerr Houston CA
Robert Kerr Houston CA, who lived in Paisley, died on 5 February 2016 aged 76. He was born on 16 February 1939 and admitted to membership on 23 November 1962. In 1974, Mr Houston became financial controller at the Irvine Development Corporation, rising to head of finance and, prior to retirement, director of finance.
William Anderson Lockhart CA
William Anderson Lockhart CA, who lived in Glasgow, died on 20 January 2016 aged 87. He was born on 18 June 1928 and admitted to membership on 30 March 1955. Mr Lockhart worked at several firms including Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co, and Biggart, Baillie and Gifford. Prior to retirement he was financial accountant at Anderson Longwall.
John Scott McIntosh CA
John Scott McIntosh CA, who lived in Linlithgow, died on 9 January 2016 aged 94. He was born on 19 May 1921 and admitted to membership of The Institute of Accountants & Actuaries in Glasgow on 28 March 1949. After qualifying, Mr McIntosh took a position at Hector Gollan & Son Ltd, was later cost accountant at United Fireclay Products Ltd, and prior to retirement was chief accountant at Steetley Refractories Ltd in Armadale, West Lothian.
John Telfer Macleod Murray CA
John Telfer Macleod Murray CA, who lived in Melbourne, died on 31 May 2015 aged 85. He was born on 21 October 1929 and admitted to membership on 16 September 1955. After qualifying Mr Murray was at Aitken Spence & Co Ltd, was later secretary and financial controller at Boustead Wood Pty Ltd, and prior to retirement was a sole practitioner.
Thomas Robertson CA
Thomas Robertson CA, who lived in Gourock, died on 10 February 2016 aged 85. He was born on 21 March 1930 and was admitted to membership on 26 November 1957 through the Society of Incorporated Accountants. After qualifying Mr Robertson became a sole practitioner, and prior to retirement was a partner and latterly a consultant at Henderson & Co.
Adam John Ogilvie Whitehouse CA
Adam John Ogilvie Whitehouse CA, who lived in Leven, Fife, died on 17 December 2015 aged 65. He was born on 29 May 1950 and admitted to membership on 23 October 1973. After qualifying, Mr Whitehouse took a position at Foubister & Bain, was later a partner at Saffery Champness, and prior to his death was a partner at Whitehouse & Co.
Jessie Barty Will CA
The death has been announced of Jessie Barty Will CA, who lived in Glasgow and was born on 9 March 1918. She was admitted to membership of The Institute of Accountants & Actuaries in Glasgow on 28 March 1945. After qualifying Miss Will took a position as an accountant at the Board of Management for Lennox Castle and Associated Institutes, and prior to retirement was a financial accountant at the Greater Glasgow Health Board (Northern District).
