Grant Thornton is expanding in the north east of Scotland with the establishment of a new location in Aberdeen, the firm has announced.

The office will open in the heart of the city’s financial district at the end of October as part of a strategy to explore opportunities north of the central belt.

Recruitment for a dedicated team of experts is now underway and the first key hire has already been made.

Ian Knott has been appointed Director of Corporate Finance, moving to Grant Thornton from investment banking energy specialist Simmons & Company International.

He has almost a decade's experience in the area having also previously held the position of Associate Director of Corporate Finance at KPMG in Aberdeen for several years.

Rob Caven, Partner and Head of Advisory in Scotland, said: “Aberdeen has been hit hard by the oil and gas downturn and wider economic and political uncertainty, but we believe there will continue to be significant opportunities for advisory focused services.

"We’re delighted to be taking our first steps north and are confident that both Grant Thornton and Aberdeen will have a sustainable, successful future.

“It’s also great having Ian Knott on board to help drive forward this new practice. Our objective is long term growth throughout Scotland, and we believe the north of Scotland will play a key role in helping to deliver that success.”

Grant Thornton is reportedly focused on increasing profits, investing in its people and offering a more dynamic range of services to meet client needs by 2020.
