Anton Colella: We must all adapt to thrive in 2017
Anton Colella, ICAS Chief Executive, looks forward to the year ahead and shares the vital role that CAs have in making businesses fit for the future.
‘Adapt or die’. While this maxim may have its roots in Darwin’s Origin of Species, it has never been more relevant to the global business world today.
2016 has been a year of change and unpredictability. From Brexit to the new US President-elect, the world’s economy has been taken on a rollercoaster ride that few of us predicted.
One thing that is certain, is that this unprecedented economic and political uncertainty will continue to affect us all in 2017.
The businesses that are the most responsive, and the most adaptable, to these constantly changing times will have the greatest chance of survival.
Those that try to do things as they always have done, will not be so fortunate.
My message to our members around the world for 2017 is to focus on adapting to this new environment.
No matter what job, level or sector we are in, we all have a role to play in making our businesses and firms fit for the future.
While we may not be able to predict the changes coming our way, one thing we will always know is that the ethical leadership, integrity and wisdom of CAs is absolutely critical in helping steer a business.
CAs have, and will continue to have, a fundamental role in providing sound and courageous insight to global business – and upholding the highest standards of ethical leadership in all that they do.
CAs are a force for good in the organisations in which they work, and I believe that the global business world is better for the contributions our members are making to it.
It’s our job as an Institute to tell the world the value of what CAs bring and the difference that they will make.
Because at its heart, the CA qualification is not about producing accountants and auditors. It’s about producing business leaders and outstanding advisors, with solid technical knowledge and a wide understanding of what makes businesses successful.
At ICAS, our challenge for the year ahead will be to continue to provide policy and insight to help our members make sense of these challenging realities – and to prepare them for the times ahead.
We want to be a bigger part of our members’ professional lives in 2017.
We will continue to work hard to be as relevant as possible and we are making it easier for CAs to engage with ICAS.
In the coming year, we will continue to place ethical leadership at the heart of all that we do – and continue to call on our members to do the same. We will be undertaking more work in 2017 on The Power of One initiative to strengthen ICAS’ position as a global leader in ethics.
We also intend to be as influential as we can be, not just in the UK, but across the globe on matters that are of interest to the profession and beyond.
Thank you for your ongoing support of ICAS.
