Accountancy jobs in London 'at all time high'
Accountancy jobs in London have reached an all-time high, according to new research.
TheCityUK's London Employment Survey revealed that jobs in accounting and management consultancy grew by 4.7 per cent – the biggest increase in jobs in the financial and related professional services industry.
Accounting and management consultancy jobs now make up over 36 per cent of all financial services jobs in London, with 260,500 people employed, the survey said.
There are now more people working in the City than ever before, with 729,000 people employed in financial and professional services.
Survey respondents said that emerging market volatility and economic weakness in the Eurozone are the two most pressing issues impacting their hiring decisions over the next six months.
Almost 60 per cent said they are seeing a skills shortage, particularly in areas such as compliance and risk management. This finding corresponds with a recent survey conducted by The CA magazine, which found that the skills shortage is a key issue for UK Finance Directors.
Chris Cummings, Chief Executive at TheCityUK, said: "London is the leading international financial centre and the industry is a major contributor to the national economy – attracting more foreign direct investment and contributing more tax (£66bn in 2013/2014) than any other industry in the UK. Its continued growth is a positive indicator about the health of the broader economy.
"A strong financial and related professional services industry and a strong economy go hand-in-hand and we urge policymakers to create a supportive environment to ensure London and the UK remains a competitive and attractive place from which and within which to do business."
TheCityUK conducted the survey of its members on employment trends in the first six months of 2015.
