Job vacancies for accounting and finance professionals rose by 24% in the first quarter of 2016, with tax professionals experiencing an 8% jump compared to the same time last year, according to a new report.

The figures obtained from the latest Robert Walters UK Jobs Index show that, despite a widespread feeling of uncertainty in financial markets, employers are increasingly looking to recruit finance professionals to help support the growth of their business.

The report shows that SMEs in particular are on the lookout for talented mid to senior level professionals. Along with the rise in advertisements for senior level financial positions, there has been a drop in demand for newly qualified and junior roles. According to Richard Boyd, Associate Director for Accounting and Finance, this shows businesses are “looking to invest in top finance and accounting talent”.

Having benefitted from a rise in consumer spending, the media and technology, e-commerce, property and hospitality sectors are looking to expand their finance teams in order to safeguard the growth of their businesses, the report said.

The leak of millions of pages of tax information in the Panama Papers scandal, and the subsequent media coverage of the event, has also resulted in a 'rising demand' for tax professionals, according to the study.

There has been an 8% rise in tax vacancies on last year’s figures, with the report describing “increased scrutiny from the media and legislators over tax payments by large corporations,” being a big driver in making the transparency of tax processes a priority for more businesses.

“In light of several major firms recently being hit with heavy fines over tax practices, businesses are making it a high priority to attract and retain highly skilled tax professionals who can ensure that they are compliant with regulations,” said Rob Mckay, Manager for tax recruitment.

“As a result, professionals with experience in tax compliance and reporting are highly sought after."
