Information on Saint John

Economy:

Saint John derived its economy from maritime industries such as shipping, fishing and shipbuilding. The city has a long history of shipbuilding at the city's dry dock, which is one of the largest in the world. Since 2003 shipbuilding has ended on the scale it once was, forcing the city to adopt a new economic strategy. The University of New Brunswick, the New Brunswick Museum and the New Brunswick Community College are important institutions, and along with, Horizon Health Network and many others, they are a part of Saint John's fast-growing research and information-technology sectors.

As the city moves away from its industrial past it now begins to capitalize on the growing sector of tourism, typically hosting over 1.5 million visitors a year and 200,000 cruise ship visitors a year, creating a renaissance in the city's historic downtown (locally known as Uptown). Many small businesses have moved into Uptown and large scale waterfront developments are underway, such as the Fundy Quay (condo, hotel and office space), Saint John Law Courts, and the Three Sisters Harbourfront condos.

Living in Saint John:

The city is known for its dynamic arts scene, beautiful parks and wilderness, great shopping, and is also one of the world’s most affordable cities. In 2020, Saint John was named the 6th most affordable city in the world for middle income housing. Compared with other cities in Canada like Toronto or Vancouver, homeownership can be a realized reality far quicker in Saint John.

Please click here to visit Remax, who have listings of different types of property available throughout all areas of the region.

Schooling:

Home to the first publicly funded high school in Canada, Saint John is dedicated to providing high quality and accessible education to the city’s residents. The public schools offer education in English and French Immersion through Anglophone South School District, and French education through District Scolaire Francophone Sud. There are also private school options available within the Greater Saint John region. Please click here for information on all schools between Saint John and St Stephen.

Aside from this overview, we would be happy to provide further detailed information about what it is like to live and work in Saint John. Additionally, please click here for Saint John’s New Resident Guide.
