The Royal Company of Merchants of the City of Edinburgh (the Merchant Company) is a charitable organisation for business and professional people which has been enriching the life of Scotland’s capital for more than 340 years.
We are an active membership organisation and one of Scotland’s largest charitable organisations. We support 250 elderly Edinburgh residents with a pension and small grants as well as disadvantaged young people with educations opportunities and maintenance grants. Over 5,500 pupils are taught in our schools where around 10% of the pupils benefit from more than £3.4 million in bursary support annually. We also provide 92 residential homes for individuals and families at affordable rents and support young businesses in their early years with grants and mentoring support.
Over the last 12 – 18 months a new Strategic Plan has been developed and is currently being implemented. This role would support the implementation of the strategy.
The person we appoint to this role will play a crucial part in the implementation of our plans and in helping us meet the challenges which lie ahead. The role has a very broad remit and is of critical importance to the delivery of our ambitions.
You will be responsible for:
- Collaborating with the outsourced finance provider to produce robust commercial and financial information
- Developing processes and procedures in conjunction with the outsourced finance provider to ensure milestones and delivery of timeous financial information
- Overseeing the production of annual accounts by the outsourced provider and leading on tax computations for entities
- Leading on the production of regular budgets, management accounts, forecasting, cashflows and pro-active cash and creditor management
- Responsible for approving invoices, creditor payments, and payroll and drafting grant documentation and monitoring payment/applications of grants
- Liaising with the Membership, Events and Communications Manager to produce regular updates to membership statistics and financials
- Leading on all KYC information for Boards and Committees for banks and investment managers
- Liaising with property managers, investment managers and the outsourced venue manager for events to ensure accurate financial reporting
- Liaising with Committees and Boards to ensure robust, meaningful financial reporting
- improving accounting systems, internal controls and compliance
- Leading on organisation of Audit and Risk Committees and reporting to Boards on management and year end accounts
- Filings on a timely basis with regulatory bodies and authorities
- Developing a longer term financial strategy including business/membership initiatives and annual social impact reporting with support from the Secretary and Chamberlain
About the individual
We are looking for a qualified CA at least 2 years part qualified, with a proven track record of operating as an all-round accountant as well as having experience of being hands on within a small finance function including liaising and influencing senior internal and external stakeholders.
The candidate must have good working knowledge of accounting systems such as Quickbooks and Sage, be a proficient user of Microsoft office including excel with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
