The Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (the Authority) promotes the health, safety and wellbeing of patients and the public by raising standards of regulation and registration of people working in health and care. We are an independent body, accountable to the UK Parliament and working with the devolved administrations across the UK. We oversee the work of 10 statutory bodies that regulate 1.6 million health professionals. We review the regulators’ performance, and audit and scrutinise their decisions about whether people on their registers are fit to practise.  We also accredit organisations that register health and care practitioners in unregulated occupations and share good practice and knowledge, monitoring policy developments and providing advice to government and other stakeholders.

Our eight person Board, led by our Chair, Caroline Corby, sets our strategic direction, determines our overall policies and approves our annual business plan and budget.  The board meets in person six times a year, with four meetings being in London and two in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Other meetings, including for our committees, usually take place virtually, with the exception of the Audit and Risk Committee which meets in person four times a year in London.

We now need to replace two valued Board Members who have reached the end of their terms, and we are seeking to appoint one with senior finance/audit experience and another with senior regulatory experience.

As a Board Member you will help maintain public, patient and professional confidence in the regulation of health and social care professionals, playing an integral role in the effective and successful governance of the Authority.  Our Board works positively and constructively together.  Board Members work with the Chair in setting the strategic direction of the Authority, whilst supporting the Executive and holding it to account.  Building and maintaining sustainable relationships is a key part of the role, as well as communicating with a wide range of stakeholders, often around highly complex and sensitive issues.

Whether you are an existing Non Executive Director or someone for whom this would be your first national board appointment, you will need to demonstrate an understanding of how boards work and the boundaries between executive and non-executive responsibilities. As such, some transferable board, committee or trustee experience, which could have been gained in a small charity or on a local/regional basis, is particularly desirable. We are a values-based organisation, committed to integrity, transparency, respect, fairness and teamwork.  Cultural fit to the Authority will therefore be a key consideration in these appointments.  You must demonstrate a strong interest in and commitment to public protection and public service, and a genuine interest in health and social care.  To be eligible for these appointments you must never have been a member of a profession regulated by one of the 10 organisations we oversee or one of our current Accredited Registers, nor a current employee, fitness to practise panel member or Council/Board Member of these.

As an organisation with public service and protection at its heart, and a Disability Confident Committed Level 1 member, the Authority is deeply committed to all aspects of equality, diversity and inclusion and we are keen to increase the diversity of our board. We therefore encourage applications from a wide range of backgrounds.
