Aneela Mather-Khan CA

Aneela Mather-Khan CA enjoys being part of a network of inspiring professionals.
I’m a Financial Analyst at AM Best, responsible for credit-rating insurance companies. I’m about to make a career change, moving into financial planning and analysis at an insurance company.
What makes you proud to be a CA?
It’s an internationally recognised qualification notorious for being difficult and requiring determination to pass. It also allows me to be part of a network of inspiring professionals. ICAS is very supportive of its younger members and really celebrates their successes.
Why did you become a CA?
I felt like it would open doors to future career opportunities and I also wanted to join a graduate programme where I was studying and training amongst peers in a supportive environment.
Have you ever had a career mentor?
I’ve had various career mentors throughout my professional life, and they have been invaluable in terms of providing me advice and career insights when I really needed it. I would really recommend it, no matter what stage of your career you are at.
Any advice for potential trainees?
Get as much work experience as you can whilst you’re studying and check if there are any internship programmes available to you, for example, I did the Civil Service Diversity Internship.
I would also recommend going to as many ICAS networking events as you can. They are a great way to find out about what people have done with their CA qualification and get inspiration for your career.
Finally, once you are studying for the CA, don’t give up. I didn’t pass all my exams the first-time, but I think it really built resilience.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I’m involved in a number of high-profile credit ratings. This involves meeting senior management and challenging them on their strategy and performance, which is always really interesting.
